What Are Goji Berries?

Goji berries, also known as wolfberries, are a sweet fruit in the nightshade family. They are reddish-orange berries that grow on vines native to Asia, particularly northwest China and the Himalayan Mountains. Goji berries grow on vines and can reach up to 12 feet tall.

Goji berries were introduced to the UK in the 1730s but were mostly used for landscaping purposes rather than for consumption. In the early 21st century, farmers in northern America began cultivating goji berries on a commercial scale to sell them fresh, as well as to create juice and processed products.

Goji berries have a tangy yet sweet flavor, often described a cross between a cranberry and a cherry. The berries are very delicate and must be picked by hand.

Common Uses of Goji Berries

Goji berries have been used in traditional Chinese medicine for over 2,000 years. They were mentioned in the ancient Chinese book “Shen Nong Ben Cao Jing” for their medicinal and agricultural benefits, this was written between about 206 BC and 220 AD! Because of this, goji berries have been a staple ingredient in traditional Chinese cuisine, such as use in soups, juices, wine, and tea. Goji berries are often referred to as a superfood due to their high nutrient content and antioxidant levels. They are low in calories, fat-free, and a great source of fiber. Goji berries also contain a wide range of vitamins, minerals, and amino acids. Goji berries are especially high in vitamin A, vitamin C, iron, and antioxidants.
